Health and Safety Award at London Bridge station - presented by Network Rail
How often do we accept the norm in our day job?
How often have you heard the phrase ‘but we have always done it like that’?
When it comes to Health and Safety and the possibility that someone could be excavating the ground in a heavily congested area with lots of gas mains, water mains and electric cables as a result of your designs, we believe that you should have the correct, skills, knowledge, experience and confidence to speak up and make sure that the optimum solutions and designs are being developed.
We believe that it is important that all of the Project team working in a construction environment have the awareness of their duties in relation to the CDM Regulations 2015 and are actively applying the principles of prevention to avoid risks where possible.
This award was presented to our Martin Robertson, Utilities Project Manager, during his time working on the iconic and challenging £1 billion redevelopment at London Bridge station on behalf of Network Rail.
The Designers had included new UK Power Networks (UKPN) DNO power supplies to each of the new traffic signs that were to be installed throughout the perimeter of the station. This would have involved a significant number of local excavations to be carried out by UKPN to install the unmetered power supply to each sign to enable each sign to be illuminated. Our Martin Robertson was aware of changes to the Traffic Signs Regulations and General Directions 2016 which meant that illumination was not necessary on certain conditions. These conditions applied in this instance which lead to Martin to seek agreement with the Designers and stakeholders such as Transport for London (TfL) that this work could be omitted.
This agreement was reached and in addition to significant cost and programme savings being achieved, it meant that we reduced a significant number of risks by avoiding the need to carry out excavations in a busy utility environment.
Our mission is to assist our Clients deliver successful outcomes in a safer, faster and better way and this work by Martin was testament to our mission.
